Bohemia Interactive has announced that its tactical military shooter ArmA III will be getting a rather curious piece of free DLC in the coming months.
ArmA III: Zeus will give a limited number of players the chance to “play God”, watching over the battlefield and editing the conditions of it in real-time, forcing non-Zeus players to adapt their style accordingly...
The developer says it was inspired by tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons, where one player acts as Game Master and controls the game and its environs whilst other players, well, play it.
These Game Master players - playing as Zeus, father of Gods himself - will apparently be able to watch the battlefield from above, have real-time editor control of the field and “manipulate or expand mission content to generate new stories and a flow of challenges”. Since the ArmA games have always prided themselves on being true-to-life, it’s not yet clear how realistic the “flow of challenges” you will be able to create will be; presumably they will have to remain, to some extent, within physical probability.
Apparently, the Zeus concept will work across existing multiplayer game times, including Team Deathmatch and Sector Control, where the expansion will allow players to either work with or try to take on Zeus.
However, the most novel aspect of the DLC pack will be the “Zeus Game Master” mode. According to Bohemia, in this mode “Masters are entirely free to create objectives, spawn units, and steer players across ArmA 3’s massive Altis and Stratis terrains.” Sounds like it could be pretty chaotic. There’s a teaser trailer below, but more information will become available this Sunday, when the DLC designer will be holding a livestream on the Zeus gameplay
